Yaaleh VeYavo is a special prayer inserted in Shmoneh Esrei and Birkat HaMazon on the holidays. The laws of if someone forgets to mention Yaaleh VeYavo are organized below:

Text of Yaaleh VeYavo

Reminding the Congregation

  1. There is a minhag in some shuls for the Shaliach Tzibur to remind everyone about Yaaleh Veyavo before Shemona Esrei. At Arvit he can actually say the words "Yaaleh Veyavo" out loud[1] but at Shacharit in order not to make an interruption between Brachot Kriyat Shema and Shemona Esrei he may not do so but he may make a noise by clapping on the Bimah.[2]
  2. In some shuls there is a minhag that the Shaliach Tzibur in the middle of his silent Shemona Esrei says the words "Yaaleh Veyavo" out loud so that others can hear him to remind them to say Yaaleh Veyavo as well.[3]

Yaaleh Vyavo in Shemonah Esrei

Chol HaMoed

  1. On Chol HaMoed, one should insert Yaaleh VeYavo in Shmoneh Esrei during the Bracha of Avoda (Retzeh). If one forgot to say Yaaleh VeYavo and remembered before concluding Shmoneh Esrei (with Yeyihu LeRatzon) one should return to Retzeh and continue from there. However, if one only remembered after finishing Shmoneh Esrei, one must repeat Shmoneh Esrei. [4]

Rosh Chodesh

  1. On Rosh Chodesh one should say Yaaleh VeYavo during Retzeh of Shmoneh Esrei. [5]

If one Forgot

During Shacharit or Mincha
  1. If one forgot Yaaleh VeYavo in Shacharit or Mincha and remembers:
    1. before saying Baruch Atta Hashem one should return to Yaaleh VeYavo
    2. after saying Baruch Atta Hashem one conclude the Bracha with the words “Lamdeni Chukecha” and then return to Yaaleh VeYavo.
    3. after saying HaMachzir…LeTzion but didn’t begin Modim, one should say Yaaleh VeYavo right there and continue with Modim.
    4. after beginning Modim (even one word)[6] before Yeheu LeRatzon one should return to Retzah and continue from there. [7]
    5. after finishing Shmoneh Esrei, repeat Shmoneh Esrei. [8]
  2. If one forgot to say Yaaleh Veyavo in Shacharit and then remembers at the beginning of Mussaf (within first three Brachot) one should continue with Shacharit and then say Mussaf. [9]
  3. If one already said Mussaf, it’s a dispute and one should make a stipulation that if I’m obligated to say another Tefillah it should count as an obligatory Tefillah and if not it should be considered a nedavah. [10]
  4. If someone is in doubt whether or not one said Yaaleh VeYavo then one should repeat Shmoneh Esrei. [11]
  5. If someone thought to say Yaaleh VeYavo before Davening and then a long time afterwards remembers vaguely then one is assumed to have fulfilled one’s obligation. [12]
  6. However, if one remembered immediately afterwards then we assume that one didn’t say Yaaleh VeYavo. [13]
  7. If one forgot to say Yaaleh VeYavo in Mincha of Rosh Chodesh and only remembers at night (after Rosh Chodesh) one should say two Shmoneh Esreis of Maariv (without Yaaleh VeYavo) as Tashlumin and the second one should be said with a stipulation of being a voluntary prayer (if I’m obligated let this be a obligatory prayer and if not let it be a voluntary one). [14]
  8. if someone said yaleh vyavo right after shema kolenu and you didn’t finish shemona esrei you have to go back to retzeh to mention yaleh vyavo there. However, if one did already finish shemona esrei you don’t have to repeat it. If you mentioned yaleh vyavo in shema kolenu you don’t have to repeat shemona esrei after you finished it.[15]
Maariv
  1. If one forgets Yaaleh VeYavo at Mariv/Arvit once one finished the Bracha of Retzeh (and all the more so if one finished Shmoneh Esrei) one doesn’t return to the Bracha or repeat Shmoneh Esrei. The same is true whether it is the first or second day of Rosh Chodesh. [16]
    1. If one forgot to say Yaaleh VeYavo and remembered before Baruch Atta Hashem one should go back to Yaaleh VeYavo and continue from there. However if one remembers after Baruch Atta Hashem then one doesn’t go back.[17]
  2. If one forgot Yaaleh Veyavo at maariv on Rosh Chodesh and thought he should go back, as soon as he realizes he should continue with what he was up to before he incorrectly returned to Retzeh.[18]
Shaliach Tzibbur
  1. If the hazzan forgot to say yaale veyavo during his silent amida, he does not go back and repeat it. [19]
  2. If the hazzan forgot to say yaaleh veyavo during the chazart hashatz, he should not repeat the chazara. [20] If the hazzan forgot to say yaale veyavo during the chazarat hashatz but remembered before he finished, he should go back to "retze" and then finish the chazara. [21]

Rosh Chodesh on Shabbat

  1. If Rosh Chodesh fell out on Shabbat one should say Yaaleh Veyavo in Shacharit, Mincha and Arvit which are otherwise the same as Shabbat davening. Mussaf is Atta Yatzarta.[22]
  2. If someone forgot to mention Yaaleh Veyavo it has the same halacha as though he forgot during the week.[23]

Yaaleh VeYavo in Benching

Rosh Chodesh

  1. On Rosh Chodesh one should insert Yaaleh VeYavo in the middle of the third Bracha of Birkat HaMazon. [24]
  2. On Rosh chodesh in Birkat HaMazon if one forgot Yaaleh VeYavo and one realized:
    1. before saying Hashem’s name at the end of the third Bracha one should return to Yaaleh VeYavo and then continue from there. [25]
    2. after saying Hashem’s name but before saying Boneh Yerushalayim one should immediately say למדני חוקיך which is the conclusion of a פסוק in Tehillim and then return to Yaaleh Veyavo and continue from there. [26]
    3. after finishing the third Bracha before starting the fourth Bracha one should insert a special Bracha ברוך אתה ה' אלקינו מלך העולם שנתן ראשי חדשים לעמו ישראל לזכרון. [27]
    4. within the first six words of the fourth Bracha (ברוך אתה ה' אלקינו מלך העולם) one should continue with the special Bracha (שנתן...) mentioned in the last option. [28]
    5. after one said the seventh word in the fourth Bracha one should continue and not repeat Birkat Hamazon. [29]

Yom Tov

  1. On Yom Tov one should insert Yaaleh VeYavo in the middle of the third Bracha of Birkat HaMazon. [30]
  2. If one forgot Yaaleh VeYavo and one realized:
    1. before saying Hashem’s name at the end of the third Bracha one should return to Yaaleh VeYavo and then continue from there. [31]
    2. after saying Hashem’s name but before saying Boneh Yerushalayim one should immediately say למדני חוקיך which is the conclusion of a פסוק in Tehillim and then return to Yaaleh Veyavo and continue from there. [32]
    3. after finishing the third Bracha before starting the fourth Bracha one should insert a special Bracha ברוך אתה ה' אלקינו מלך העולם שנתן ימים טובים לעמו ישראל לששון ולשמחה את יום חג (פלוני) הזה ברוך אתה ה' מקדש ישראל והזמנים. . [33]
    4. within the first six words of the fourth Bracha (ברוך אתה ה' אלקינו מלך העולם) one should continue with the special Bracha (שנתן...) mentioned in the last option. [34]
    5. after one said the seventh word in the fourth Bracha one must repeat Birkat HaMazon. [35]

Chol HaMoed

  1. On Chol HaMoed, one should insert Yaaleh VeYavo in the middle of the third Bracha of Birkat HaMazon. [36]
  2. If one forgot Yaaleh VeYavo and one realized:
    1. before saying Hashem’s name at the end of the third Bracha, one should return to Yaaleh VeYavo and then continue from there. [37]
    2. after saying Hashem’s name but before saying Boneh Yerushalayim, one should immediately say למדני חוקיך which is the conclusion of a פסוק in Tehillim and then return to Yaaleh Veyavo and continue from there. [38]
    3. after finishing the third Bracha before starting the fourth Bracha one should insert a special Bracha ברוך אתה ה' אלקינו מלך העולם שנתן מועדים לעמו ישראל לששון ולשמחה את יום חג (פלוני) הזה [39]

Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh/Chol Hamoed/Yom Tov

  1. In a situation where one needs to recite retzeh for shabbat in addition to yaaleh veyavo for whatever occasion, retzeh should be recited first. [42]
  2. If one began to say yaaleh veyavo before saying retzeh some poskim say he should continue with yaaleh veyavo and when he finishes to say retzeh [43] and other poskim say to stop wherever you remembered and say retzeh and yaaleh veyavo in the proper order. [44]

If meal extended after sunset

  1. If the meal extended until after sunset on Rosh Chodesh one should say Yaaleh VeYavo in Birkat HaMazon since we follow the beginning of the meal. If, however, one already said Maariv, one should not insert Yaaleh VeYavo in Birkat HaMazon. [45]
  2. If the meal extended until after sunset on Yom Tov, Chol Hamoed, or Rosh Chodesh and one has to insert the special Bracha between the third and fourth Bracha this special Bracha should be said without Shem UMalchut meaning one should just say ברוך שנתן…[46]
  3. If one began a meal before Rosh Chodesh and finished it on Rosh Chodesh and ate a Kezayit after nightfall, one should insert Yaaleh VeYavo in Birkat HaMazon. [47] If one finished one's meal during Bein HaShemashot one shouldn't insert Yaaleh VeYavo, yet it would be proper to eat a Kezayit after Tzeit HaKochavim and insert Yaaleh VeYavo to avoid any doubt.[48]
  4. If one started one's meal during Ben Hashemashot of Rosh Chodesh and finished it after nightfall one shouldn't insert Yaaleh Veyavo.[49]

A Woman Who forgot Yaaleh VeYavo in Birkat HaMazon

  1. A woman who forgot Yaaleh VeYavo in benching should not repeat benching except on the first night of Pesach. [50]

  1. Maharil (Hilchot Rosh Chodesh no. 1) writes that the minhag was to announce before Shemona Esrei of Arvit "Yaaleh Veyavo." He mentions that some had the minhag to say "Rosh Chodesh" on the second day in place of "Yaaleh Veyavo." He concludes that some have the minhag that the children announce it so that the Shaliach Tzibur doesn't need to interrupt between Shema and Shemona Esrei. Rashba 1:293 writes that the practice to interrupt before Shemona Esrei to announce Yaaleh Veyavo is permitted since it is necessary for the Shemona Esrei (similar to Brachot 40a). Shulchan Aruch 236:2, Magen Avraham 236:1, and Mishna Brurah 236:7 codify the Rashba that it is permitted to make this announcement. Magen Avraham and Mishna Brurah extend it even to Al Hanissim. Shaarei Knesset Hagedola 422:1 agrees.
  2. Bet Yosef 114:2 writes that it is forbidden to interrupt between Brachot Kriyat Shema and Shemona Esrei to announce asking for rain.
  3. Shaarei Knesset Hagedola 422:1 quotes the Mateh Moshe 519 quotes his teacher the Maharshal that they shouldn't interrupt between Shema and Shemona Esrei even at Arvit. Rather they should raise their voice when saying the words "Yaaleh Veyavo" to remind everyone. The Shaarei Knesset Hagedola adds that he observed some shuls which had this minhag.
    • Eretz Tzvi 24 writes that perhaps this practice depends on whether we consider the Yaaleh Veyavo as part of Shemona Esrei on Rosh Chodesh and or it is like a separate addition, even if requires you to repeat Shemona Esrei. That perhaps is the Machloket in Tosfot Brachot 26b. If it is part of the Shemona Esrei it should be forbidden to say those words out loud like it is forbidden to say any other part of Shemona Esrei out loud, however, if it is a separate addition then it might be allowed to say it out loud.

Yabia Omer OC 11:34 writes that since you said yaleh vyavo immediately after shema kolenu it is like you said it in the middle of shema kolenu and some achronim hold that it is acceptable to mention yaleh vyavo in shema kolenu. This is based on the Ravyah and S”A who hold for tefillot that if you forgot you would need to repeat shemona esrei if you were to say them at the end of the bracha in which they were supposed to be inserted it is effective. This is even true here when at the time you didn’t need to say the yaleh vyavo yet since you were supposed to say it in retzeh but nonetheless we say we can view it as though it was part of shema kolenu similar to the achronim who say that immediately after barchenu you can add vten tal even though you still have the opportunity to say it in shema kolenu. However, if you didn’t finish shemona esrei yet you should return since the rest of the shemona esrei might be in vain and so it is worthwhile to return. But after the fact one doesn’t have to return.
  16. Gemara Brachot 30b says that if one forgot Yaaleh VeYavo at Mariv/Arivt one shouldn’t repeat Shmoneh Esrei because the Bet Din doesn’t sanctify the moon during the night. The Gemara says that it doesn’t matter whether it’s the first or second day of Rosh Chodesh. This is codified in Tur and Shulchan Aruch O.C. 422:1.

  18. Mbashan Ashiv p. 5 writes that if a person incorrectly went back on rosh chodesh to retzeh and realized he should immediately stop and return to what he was up to. In his example, he was up to sim shalom and then returned to retzeh. Once he realizes his mistake he should return to sim shalom. Shelat Rav v. 1 p. 342 quotes Rav Chaim Kanievsky to this effect as well. He says that if a person returned to retzeh after he already began modim, he should immediately return to modim once he realizes his mistake. Mishna Brurah 294:9 writes that if a person returned to an insertion he wasn't supposed to return to it is considered an interruption.

  23. Ishei Yisrael 39:68 writes that Yaaleh Veyavo on Shabbat is the same as during the week if one forgets. However, Rav Soloveitchik (Reshimot Shiurim Brachot 26b no. 2) quoted Rav Chaim Soloveitchik as ruling that if someone forgot Yaaleh Veyavo at Shacharit he can repeat Shemona Esrei to add Yaaleh Veyavo but it will only be a voluntary prayer, otherwise one will make up that omission with Mussaf when he mentions Rosh Chodesh. However, on Shabbat since it is forbidden to offer a voluntary prayer it is forbidden to repeat Shacharit and he needs to rely on the mentioning of Rosh Chodesh in Mussaf.

  50. Sh”t Rabbi Akiva Eiger 1 says that women aren’t obligated in a meal on Yom Tov and so they don’t repeat benching if they forgot Yaaleh VeYavo. However, Sh”t Matat Yado MeHaTorah 21, Sh”t Sheilat Yacov 97, Pitchei Teshuva 529, and Sdei Chemed (Yom Tov 2:10) write that women would repeat benching either because the meal is an absolute chiyuv (as it seems from Tosfot HaRosh Brachot 49b) or because it is a voluntary fulfillment of the mitzvah. Nonetheless, Sh”t Yabia Omer 6:18, Sh”t Be'er Moshe 3:38, and Sh”t Shevet HaLevi 5:18 write that because of Safek Brachot, a women doesn’t repeat benching like Rabbi Akiva Eiger.
    • Everyone agrees (Sh”t Rabbi Akiva Eiger) that on the first night Pesach, women are obligated in the meal and would have to repeat benching if they forgot Yaale VeYavo.
