  1. Many Acharonim, including the Maharshal, Radbaz, and Shach, have disparaging things to say about the Migal Oz, but the Yad Malachi minimizes the context of their complains to his responses to the Raavad's challenges to the Rambam. Indeed, the Koreh HaDorot praises the Migdal Oz, R' Shem Tov ben Avraham,[1] for his great erudition and familiarity with Nigleh and Nistar.[2]
  2. He wrote his commentary on the entire Mishneh Torah, but much of it is no longer extant.[3]
  3. He was a student of the Rashba.[4]

  1. Regarding the story with the Ritva, it's actually about the Maggid Mishneh, whose name was also Yom Tov, unlike the Migdal Oz, whose name was Shem Tov. See Toldot Chachmei Yisrael (Shulman, vol. 3 page 137) The Chida points out how some also confused him with the Ritva. (Shem HaGedolim, Sefarim, Mem 35)
  2. Yad Malachi (Klalei HaMigdal Oz 8), Shem HaGedolim (Sefarim, Mem 35). See Matnat Yado ad loc for the whole list of citations.
