If someone recited Birkat Hamapil and his parents asked him a question, and was forced to answer and he is forced to answer them, he should answer them due to the mitzvah of kibbud av vaem. [1] There is no need to wait until one is overcome by sleep to say hamapil, rather he could say it right before he lies down to go to sleep. [2] Even on Yamim Tovim and shabbos it is allowed to say the "Ribono shel Olam"prayer before Kriyat Shema. [3] Some say to say hamapil before kriyat shema, some say to say it after. [4][5]
