- Foods which are normally not separated in large quantities and are usually eaten right after they are separated may be separated on Yom Tov without a utensil that’s designated for separating. [1] However, foods which couldn’t have been separated before Yom Tov and it’s not usually separated in large quantities may be separated on Yom Tov even with a utensil designated for separation. For example, it’s permissible to strain noodles from the water even using a strainer. [2]
- Anything which couldn’t have been separated before Yom Tov may be separated on Yom Tov even if it’s not immediately before the meal. [3]
- If it’s usual to separate with a designated utensil then it’s forbidden to use that on Yom Tov. [4]
- When separating with one’s hand, if there’s a majority of food then separate out the undesired parts unless doing so will be a greater effort than separating out the food. Similarly, if there’s a majority of undesired parts then one should separate out the food unless doing so will be a greater effort than separating out the undesired parts. [5]
- If it was possible to have done the separation before Yom Tov and one didn’t then when doing the separation on Yom Tov one should separate only in the fashion one would do so on Shabbat (with one’s hand, immediately before the meal, and only separating out the food). [6]
- One may wash fruits on Yom Tov under a faucet immediately before the meal even though it’ll remove dirt or chemicals. [7]
